NM Wants More Trucking Industry Money

Effective July 1, 2004 all NEW Interstate carriers applying for the New Mexico Tax ID Permit (weight-distance tax) will be required to file under the new format, which requires individual unit specific permits.

The NM Department of Revenue recently adopted regulations, effective July 1, 2004, that creates a vehicle-specific permit (motor carriers will be issued blank permits on non-reproducible paper that they are to complete with specific vehicle information and then carry in that vehicle) and assesses a $2.00 per-permit charge.

However, ATA has filed an original action before the New Mexico Supreme Court challenging New Mexico’s reinstitution of an identification card (and attendant fee) requirement for the motor vehicles subject to the state’s weight-distance tax.
